The release of Sid Meier's Civilization VII has left many Firaxis fans disappointed, as the game has garnered overwhelmingly negative initial reviews on Steam. Players have expressed frustration over the game's clunky interface, outdated graphics, and a pervasive sense of incompleteness.
At the time of the post, the game had amassed over 1,000 reviews, resulting in a dismal score of 37%. User Cool CGI Dog, who spent approximately 1.5 hours playing, shared their disappointment:
The game feels... so blatantly incomplete after just a few minutes, especially by Civ standards. The resource icons look like they're from 1998, the interface is terrible, and everything feels extremely sloppy.
There isn't any discernible care, which is something I didn't anticipate from Firaxis. This release is a far cry from the polish of Civ VI. At the very least, Civ VII's interface needs a complete visual overhaul to justify its steep $70 price tag. With this game, Sid Meier himself slapped me around and spat in my mouth. And I didn't even agree to it.
Another player, WillNever, who spent around 2.5 hours with the game, echoed similar sentiments:
The interface looks and feels like it was designed during the alpha phase of development and hasn't been touched or improved since. While the new mechanics are interesting, it's not worth the struggle to navigate this terrible interface. It would take months of tweaking to make the game enjoyable.
Many reviewers feel that the game was released prematurely and requires substantial updates to meet the expected standards. The $70 price point has been particularly criticized, with players arguing that it does not reflect the current quality of the product.
Fans of the series are hopeful that Firaxis will take these criticisms to heart and release patches to address the issues, restoring Civilization VII to the high standards set by its predecessors. The Civilization series has always been celebrated for its meticulous detail and quality, and fans remain optimistic that the seventh installment will eventually live up to its legacy, though not in its present form.
