"Shadow of the Colossus Film: New Update Revealed"

Summary

  • The Shadow of the Colossus film adaptation receives an update from director Andy Muschietti.
  • Muschietti confirms that the project is still active, with ongoing discussions about its budget and the game's popularity.
  • Sony Pictures announced the live-action adaptation over a decade ago in 2009, with the game’s director Fumito Ueda involved in the production.

Argentine filmmaker Andy Muschietti, renowned for his work on the It remakes and The Flash, has shared an exciting update on the long-awaited Shadow of the Colossus film adaptation. Sony Pictures first announced the development of the live-action adaptation back in 2009, bringing on board the game's director, Fumito Ueda, to ensure fidelity to the original source material. Before Muschietti took the helm, Josh Trank, known for Chronicle, was initially set to direct but had to step away due to scheduling conflicts.

In addition to the Shadow of the Colossus project, Sony unveiled a slate of new live-action adaptations at CES 2025. This includes a new Helldivers movie, despite the similarities to the 1997 sci-fi classic Starship Troopers, as well as adaptations of Horizon Zero Dawn and Ghost of Tsushima.

During an interview on Radio TU’s La Baulera del Coso, Muschietti emphasized that the Shadow of the Colossus film is far from abandoned. He acknowledged the lengthy development time might lead fans to believe otherwise, but pointed out that several factors are at play. "There are factors that have nothing to do with your hobby and desire to make it, but with how popular an intellectual property like this is," Muschietti explained. He highlighted the game's status as a beloved open-world title with a poignant ending and noted that the project's budget is still under discussion. Muschietti also confirmed the existence of multiple script versions, with a particular favorite in mind.

Shadow of the Colossus Film Adaptation Gets Update From Director

Other projects have attempted to capture the essence and scale of Shadow of the Colossus, such as Capcom's Dragon's Dogma 2 in 2024, which drew inspiration from the game. However, Sony's original action-adventure remains a cherished classic. Muschietti, who describes himself as not a "big gamer," praised Shadow of the Colossus as a "masterpiece" and admitted to playing it multiple times.

Fumito Ueda, the mastermind behind Shadow of the Colossus, has since founded his own studio, GenDesign. At The Game Awards 2024, they announced a new sci-fi game that echoes the isolation found in the 2005 epic. Despite the conclusion of high-definition remakes with the 2018 PlayStation 4 release, Shadow of the Colossus continues to leave a lasting legacy. The upcoming live-action film aims to honor this legacy, appealing to both dedicated fans and newcomers to its captivating fantasy world.
