Following the successful release of Avowed, the game's director, Carrie Patel, has hinted at exciting possibilities for the franchise's future. Avowed has achieved commendable sales figures, pleasing both Microsoft and Obsidian. In her interview, Patel expressed her desire to continue working on the franchise, stating, "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it." This suggests that fans might soon see more adventures set in the Avowed universe, either through expansions or a full-fledged sequel.

Changes in Avowed During Development

The journey to Avowed's release was not without its hurdles. Patel shared insights into the game's development, which began in 2018 amidst Obsidian's transition from an independent studio to being acquired by Microsoft. The project saw significant changes, including the removal of multiplayer features and a shift in leadership, leading to a complete reboot in January 2021. Under Patel's direction, the focus shifted to enhancing the narrative and lore connected to the Pillars of Eternity franchise, and replacing the open world with more manageable open zones. Reflecting on the chaotic yet fruitful development process, Patel noted, "There’s this interesting thing I’ve seen on every project I’ve worked on or seen during my time at the studio — things are messy, messy, messy, then they start coming together."

With Avowed reinvigorating interest in the Pillars of Eternity universe, Obsidian is now eyeing a new direction for the franchise. During a Twitch Livestream on February 23, 2025, Josh Sawyer, director of Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, revealed the studio's interest in developing a tactics game titled "Pillars: Tactics." Sawyer emphasized the enthusiasm within the studio for this project but also highlighted the challenges in determining its scope, team size, and visual quality. While the idea of a tactics game gains traction, Sawyer also expressed his ambition to create a third Pillars of Eternity game with a substantial budget akin to that of Baldur’s Gate 3.
