Xbox's Phil Spencer to Continue Featuring PlayStation, Nintendo Logos at Microsoft Events

by Bella Apr 14,2025

Microsoft has recently adopted a new approach to showcasing its games, notably during Xbox events where it now includes logos for rival platforms like PlayStation 5. This shift reflects the company's broader strategy to expand its games across multiple platforms, a trend that has been evident in recent showcases. For instance, during the Xbox Developer Direct, games like Ninja Gaiden 4, Doom: The Dark Ages, and Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 were presented with logos for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, PC, and Game Pass. This marks a significant change from earlier events, such as the June 2024 showcase, where games like Doom: The Dark Ages were announced for PlayStation 5 only after the Xbox event, and other titles like Dragon Age: The Veilguard, Diablo 4's Vessel of Hatred, and Assassin’s Creed Shadows were announced for Xbox and PC without mentioning PlayStation.

In contrast, Sony and Nintendo maintain a more traditional approach. Sony's recent State of Play showcase, for example, focused solely on PlayStation without mentioning Xbox, even for multiplatform games like Monster Hunter Wilds and Shinobi: Art of Vengeance. Similarly, other games like Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater and Onimusha: Way of the Sword were shown exclusively for PlayStation, despite their availability on other platforms.

Microsoft's gaming chief, Phil Spencer, addressed this change in strategy during an interview with XboxEra. He emphasized the importance of transparency and honesty about where games are available. Spencer explained that discussions about including rival platform logos in Xbox showcases began the previous year but logistical challenges delayed their implementation. He stressed that the goal is to let players know where they can access Microsoft's games, whether on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Steam, or other platforms, while still highlighting the unique experiences available on Xbox.

Spencer acknowledged that not all platforms are equal, particularly in terms of capabilities like cloud gaming, but emphasized that the focus should be on the games themselves. He believes that making games accessible to more people is crucial and aligns with his background in game development. As Microsoft continues this approach, expect to see logos for PlayStation 5 and possibly Nintendo Switch 2 in future Xbox showcases, including the anticipated June 2025 event featuring games like Gears of War: E-Day, Fable, Perfect Dark, State of Decay 3, and the next Call of Duty.

However, don't anticipate similar changes from Sony and Nintendo, as they continue to prioritize their respective console ecosystems.
