Elden Ring Nightreign Ditching Popular FromSoftware Feature

Elden Ring Nightreign: No In-Game Messaging System

FromSoftware has confirmed that Elden Ring Nightreign will not feature an in-game messaging system, a hallmark of the Soulsborne series. This decision, according to game director Junya Ishizaki (in a January 3rd interview with IGN Japan), is a practical one. The anticipated shorter play sessions of approximately 40 minutes per gameplay interval in Nightreign's multiplayer-focused design wouldn't allow sufficient time for players to read and write messages.

The asynchronous messaging system, a key element of player engagement in previous titles, enabling players to share helpful tips, misleading clues, or humorous observations, will be absent. This system's removal aims to streamline the gameplay experience and maintain a faster pace.

Preserving Asynchronous Features

Despite the omission of the messaging system, FromSoftware intends to retain and enhance other asynchronous features. The bloodstain mechanic, for example, will return, offering players a more detailed view of other players' deaths and even the opportunity to loot their spectral remains.

A 'Compressed' RPG Experience

This shift away from the messaging system aligns with FromSoftware's vision for Nightreign as a more intense, multiplayer-centric experience compared to the original Elden Ring. The game's three-day structure also contributes to this goal of creating a "compressed RPG" with high variability and minimal downtime.

Nightreign is slated for a 2025 release, as revealed during The Game Awards 2024, though a precise release date is yet to be announced by FromSoftware and Bandai Namco.
