Chess Enters the Esports Arena

Chess Makes Historic Esports Debut at EWC 2025

The Esports World Cup (EWC) 2025 tournament lineup has a surprising new addition: chess! This ancient game joins the ranks of esports, a testament to its enduring popularity and competitive spirit.

A Royal Game Takes Center Stage

The partnership between Chess.com, Grandmaster Magnus Carlsen, and the Esports World Cup Foundation (EWCF) brings competitive chess to the world's largest gaming and esports festival. This unprecedented move aims to introduce the classic strategy game to a broader, more mainstream audience.

EWCF CEO Ralf Reichert hailed chess as "the mother of all strategy games," expressing excitement about its inclusion. He highlighted the game's rich history, global appeal, and vibrant competitive scene as perfect attributes for the EWC's mission to unite diverse gaming communities.

World champion and top-ranked player Magnus Carlsen will serve as an ambassador, aiming to connect chess with a new generation of fans. He expressed his enthusiasm for the opportunity to expand the game's reach and inspire future players.

Riyadh 2025: A $1.5 Million Showdown

Chess's Esports Arrival

The EWC 2025 event, taking place in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, from July 31st to August 3rd, boasts a $1.5 million prize pool. To qualify, players must excel in the 2025 Champions Chess Tour (CCT) held in February and May. The top 12 CCT players, along with four "Last Chance Qualifier" winners, will compete for a $300,000 prize pool and a coveted spot in the EWC, marking chess's groundbreaking esports debut.

To enhance appeal to esports fans, the 2025 CCT will feature a faster-paced format. Matches will use a 10-minute time control with no increment, and tiebreakers will be decided by a single Armageddon game.

Chess, originating in ancient India over 1500 years ago, has captivated generations. Its digital evolution, fueled by platforms like Chess.com and the rise of esports, broadened its accessibility, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The game's popularity has also been boosted by streaming, influencers, and shows like "The Queen's Gambit."

With its official recognition as an esport, chess is poised for even greater growth and wider appeal.
